Profile
Over 30+ years, Jim has built a robust practice serving industry leaders in the nonprofit, health care, and commercial business areas. A wide variety of clients — including nonprofit and quasi-governmental service and health care providers, other private foundations and public charities, and commercial entities — rely on Jim's technical experience and practical approach to guide their most important decisions. He serves as general counsel for organizations that provide grants or public benefit services, and many of his longtime clients include mental health and developmental/intellectual disability service providers, foundations supporting or arranging health-related community benefit services, community health services providers, and physician groups. One of Jim's most distinctive areas of practice is advising on compliance audits for governmental programs, which can involve vast amounts of data. He works closely with clients on identifying and managing applicable risks throughout the process and has become a go-to resource for this sensitive and highly technical work. Where health care and nonprofit intersect, Jim helps his clients understand unique compliance issues and leverage the talents and efficiencies of their teams and the legal opportunities available. Jim regularly collaborates with clients on acquisitions, parent and affiliate arrangements, privacy and other compliance issues, billing matters, risk management, governance concerns, and contract review. The contracts and policies he drafts are created to reduce risk while balancing administrative burdens and expenses appropriately. As an experienced counselor with a dynamic group of clients, Jim offers a global perspective for all business decisions.
