Esteemed Attorney Hugh Moore Retires from Litigation Practice at Chambliss
After a long and fulfilling career spanning over 50 years, Hugh Moore announced his retirement.
For 17 years, Hugh worked as an attorney in Chambliss’ litigation section, focusing his practice on business litigation, criminal law, antitrust and trade regulation, and airport law. In addition, he served as lead counsel in countless jury bench trials and argued numerous appeals. Hugh was honored with a resolution from the Tennessee Supreme Court for 15 years of service as the Supreme Court Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure Committee chair. He was also recognized for many years in The Best Lawyers in America® for bet-the-company litigation, commercial litigation, and municipal litigation, as well as by Mid-South Super Lawyers for civil litigation defense. In 2023, Hugh was awarded the Jac Chambliss Lifetime Achievement Award for his professional achievements and notable legal practice. According to the Chattanooga Bar Association, this recognition is given to an attorney who has demonstrated the highest standards of the legal professional, facilitated access to the justice system, served and supported the Chattanooga community, inspired respect and fellowship among the members of the profession, and maintained a high standard of ethics.
“Hugh’s impact on the legal profession and this community will be felt for generations. From serving as the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority’s attorney for 38 years to serving on numerous local nonprofit boards, Hugh is an example of a servant leader. He is known for his zealous client advocacy while remaining respectful to his adversaries and the bench. Still, it is the time Hugh spent with other lawyers, mentoring and guiding them through this profession, that I will always remember. We all know, however, that in this well-deserved retirement, Hugh will continue to grow his concert list. ” -Shareholder and Litigation Attorney Jeffrey Maddux
Hugh’s dedication to professional and community service was an important part of his career. He is a past board member of the Chattanooga Bar Association, was the former chairperson for the Tennessee Supreme Court’s Advisory Commission on the Rules of Practice and Procedure, and is a founding master of the American Inns of Court, Brock-Cooper chapter. He served as president of the Federal Bar Association, Chattanooga chapter, and has acted as the grand jury foreman for Hamilton County. He was inducted as a Fellow of the American, Tennessee, and Chattanooga Bar Foundations, as well as the American College of Trial Lawyers. In addition, he was a member of the Criminal Justice Act Mentor Panel and on the board of the Orange Grove Foundation. One of Hugh’s most notable accomplishments was his 38 years of dedicated service to the Chattanooga Metropolitan Airport Authority, where he played a crucial role in facilitating the transfer of airport property from the city to the authority in 1985 and helped write the new airport’s charter.
Colleagues and clients have benefited from Hugh’s sharp legal mind, tireless advocacy, and genuine dedication to the law and the Chattanooga community. We wish him all the best in this next chapter!
