Tennessee Is Protecting Grandma with New Legislation

Tennessee is protecting Grandma! Two pieces of legislation were approved this year: the Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act, which is on its way to Gov. Haslam to be signed into law, and the Elderly and Vulnerable Adult Financial Exploitation Act, which has been signed and enacted. The Elder and Vulnerable Adult Protection Act makes it a felony offense for any person to knowingly physically or psychologically abuse an elderly or vulnerable adult. A separate bill aimed at solely protecting the finances of the elderly and vulnerable, known as the Elderly and Vulnerable Adult Financial Exploitation Act, authorizes financial service providers to refuse service when there is reasonable belief that financial exploitation or theft has occurred. The intent of the act is to allow financial service providers the discretion to take action to assist in detecting and preventing financial exploitation without liability. Don’t mess with Grandma… or her banker.
