Tennessee Highway Patrol K-9 Officers May Receive Health Care Benefits
Legislative Update – Tennessee General Assembly

The Senate approved legislation this week allowing retirement health care benefits for Tennessee Highway Patrol K-9 officers. SB1286 / HB1353, sponsored by Sen. Rusty Crow and Rep. John Holsclaw, requires the Tennessee Department of Safety to pay $85 per month to a retired highway patrol officer for the medical care of his or her retired canine if the officer is given care and custody upon retirement. The officer must submit the canine’s medical records to the department by June 1 every year. The bill is set to be heard in the House State Government Subcommittee next week. There are five retired and 35 current K-9 officers working with the Tennessee Highway Patrol. Takin’ care of man’s best friend.
