Gov. Haslam Proposes to Establish School Transportation Supervisor Program
Legislative Update – Tennessee General Assembly
Gov. Haslam’s proposed legislation to establish a school transportation supervisor program passed out of the House Transportation Committee this week. The program sets up monitoring and oversight of transportation services for local education authorities and charter schools. SB1210 / HB322 places the following requirements on new school bus drivers in order for them to receive an initial school bus driver license endorsement:
- complete a training program;
- be at least 25 years of age; and
- have at least five consecutive years of unrestricted driving experience.
The bill will be considered in the House Education Administration and Planning Committee next week.
Another school bus driver bill, SB149 / HB89, is set to go before the House Transportation Subcommittee next week. This legislation prohibits a person from becoming a school bus driver if: the person has been found guilty of any criminal offense; or the person has committed any serious traffic violation, including excessive speeding, reckless driving, or a violation of any state or local law in connection with an accident or collision resulting in death or injury to any person or property.
